The Silent Pressure of the Holidays

The holidays bring lights, laughter, and love, but also exhaustion, comparison, and chaos. For many women, it’s the busiest, loneliest, and most emotionally draining season of the year. While we enjoy making the holidays special for every person in our family, we have to admit there are times we feel drained. As moms and caregivers, we find ways to make holiday memories, by honoring traditions and spending time together creating meaningful experiences. We make sure the people in our lives feel seen and special. But who does that for you? Who makes sure you are seen, appreciated, and loved? This guide offers faith-based and practical ways to stay calm, grounded, and genuinely present. Lets create a Holiday Stress Survival Guide.

1️⃣ Dealing With Difficult Family Members

Part of the best memories during the holidays are reconnecting with people we don’t get to see often. But some of these people aren’t truly missed. They are included because they are family, and it’s the right thing to do for them and you.  In order to manage their presence and keep the peace, here are 4 tips to get through without drama.

  1. Set emotional boundaries before gatherings, prepare, and don’t react.
  2. Remember: peace sometimes means distance.
  3. Pray before you enter the room; don’t absorb their energy.
  4. Leave when needed, gracefully, not guiltily. Go for a walk or just excuse yourself for the day.

2️⃣ Navigating Financial or Emotional Hardship

As we enter this time of the year and the country is a mess, we may have some tension regarding finances. Maybe the budget is tight. Maybe you need to prioritize other things besides gifts. There are many reasons finances are a stressor this time of year. Here are 4 tips to ensure you can give with your heart without breaking the bank.

  1. Focus on connection, not consumption.
  2. Give thoughtful, not expensive, gifts, time, kindness, and presence.
  3. Gratitude softens scarcity; list blessings daily.
  4. Let go of perfection. Jesus was born in a manger, not a mansion.

I write more about this in my blog 10 Simple ways of becoming financially independent.

I also have learned to use a budget planner to manage my finances without feeling stressed. I have a dsignated budget for the holidays that do not interfere with my regular budget. This helps keep me on track and without stress.

3️⃣ Managing the Busyness and Endless To-Do Lists

Whether it is planning to host, planning to attend a Christmas party, preparing kids’ rehearsal costumes, getting all the gifts, among many other things this season, we all acknowledge it can get overwhelming. Here are 4 tips to try and help keep this time of year organized to reduce stress.

  1. Prioritize peace, say “no” without guilt.
  2. Schedule moments of quiet like appointments.
  3. Delegate tasks; you’re not meant to carry it all.
  4. Replace “I have to” with “I choose to.”

4️⃣ Keeping Faith and Gratitude at the Center

With all the fun, food, parties and christmas carols we tend to forget the reason we celebrate. We must take time to be thankful of Gods ultimate sacrifice of sending his son Jesus to a manger for us. With that in mind try being intentional about your time of devotional. Here are 4 tips to improve this are.

  1. Begin each morning with prayer or a gratitude journal.
  2. Let your playlist or décor reflect peace, not pressure.
  3. Remember why you celebrate, love, faith, and renewal.
  4. End each day with stillness: “Thank You” is enough.

I especially recommend the gratitude journal to help impove your mindset. A great way to manage depression and improve your outlook.

🌿 Conclusion:

Peace isn’t found in a perfect holiday; it’s found in a centered heart. It is easy to get distracted and forget why this time of year is so special. There is a joy that comes for many people this time of year. So lets take the opportunity and remind others how to be intentional with our time with ourselves, each other and the lord. This year, protect your spirit, guard your energy, and let grace lead your schedule.
