So when healthcare providers bring it up, it’s easy to assume the conversation is about the number on the scale. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, however, my primary concern isn’t weight; it’s mental health. Exercise is one of the most powerful lifestyle tools we have for improving mood, reducing anxiety, managing stress, and supporting overall emotional well-being.

I also find that many people overestimate how active they are. Walking to the mailbox, being on your feet at work, or doing household chores certainly keeps you moving, but intentional exercise is different. Purposeful physical activity that elevates your heart rate and is done consistently provides the greatest mental and physical health benefits.

This past year, I recommitted myself to my own fitness journey. Like many women, I’ve exercised on and off over the years but struggled with consistency. Between work, family responsibilities, and the demands of everyday life, it’s easy to put ourselves last. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably promised yourself you’ll start “next Monday” more times than you can count.

What finally changed for me wasn’t a desire to lose weight but realizing that regular exercise is one of the greatest investments I can make in my future. It helps me care for both my body and my mind, allowing me to maintain a better quality of life. And isn’t that what we all want? Our overall well-being depends not only on our physical health but also on our mental health, and exercise is one of the few habits that benefits both.

Why Exercise Improves Mental Health

exercise and mental health

To understand the connection between exercise and mental health, it helps to first understand what happens in the brain during depression. Depression affects several brain systems involved in mood, motivation, memory, and emotional regulation. One important factor is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Think of BDNF as fertilizer for your brain. It helps brain cells grow, communicate, and form new connections. People with depression often have lower levels of this important protein, but regular exercise has been shown to increase it.

The encouraging news is that exercise can help. A JAMA study has found that regular physical activity increases BDNF levels, promoting healthier brain function and neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt, learn, and form new connections. In other words, exercise doesn’t just strengthen your muscles; it also helps strengthen your brain.

BDNF is only one piece of the puzzle. Your brain is also constantly producing chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. These chemicals help regulate your mood, emotions, sleep, motivation, and response to stress.

Some of the most important neurotransmitters include:

Serotonin : helps keep your emotional thermostat balanced.

Dopamine: gives you the motivation to get started and the satisfaction of accomplishing something.

Endorphins: your body’s natural painkillers that create that ‘I feel great after my workout’ feeling.

Cortisol: your body’s alarm system. Helpful in emergencies, but harmful when it’s stuck in the ‘on’ position.

The good news is that regular exercise has been shown to positively influence all of these brain chemicals. That’s one of the reasons many people notice they feel calmer, happier, less stressed, and more mentally clear after being physically active.

The Psychological Benefits of Exercise

The benefits of exercise go far beyond changes in brain chemistry. Regular physical activity also improves the way we think, feel, and interact with the world around us.

One of the first things many people notice is an increase in self-confidence. As you become stronger, build endurance, stay consistent, and reach personal goals, you begin to see yourself differently. Keeping the promises you make to yourself creates a sense of accomplishment and pride. That growing confidence can improve self-esteem and help reduce symptoms of depression.

Exercise can also increase social connectedness. Whether you join a gym, attend a fitness class, participate in a walking group, or simply exercise with a friend, physical activity creates opportunities to connect with others. Having people who encourage and support you can increase motivation and make it easier to stay committed to healthy habits.

Another important benefit is improved emotional regulation. Regular exercise helps reduce stress while making it easier to manage difficult emotions. Many people find they are less reactive, think more clearly, and recover more quickly from stressful situations after incorporating exercise into their routine.

Exercise also supports several healthy lifestyle habits that work together to improve mental health. People who exercise regularly often experience better sleep, develop healthier eating habits, spend less time in front of screens, and have more energy throughout the day. These positive lifestyle changes reinforce one another, creating a cycle that supports both physical and emotional well-being.

The beauty of exercise is that its benefits extend far beyond the time you spend being active. It influences your brain, your body, your relationships, your confidence, and your daily habits, all of which play an important role in supporting long-term mental health.

How Exercise Supports Women’s Hormonal Health

Women’s bodies experience hormonal changes throughout life, from the menstrual cycle to pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause. These natural fluctuations can affect mood, energy, sleep, motivation, and even how we respond to stress.

Regular exercise is one of the most effective lifestyle habits for supporting both hormonal and mental health during these transitions. Physical activity has been shown to help reduce stress hormones, improve insulin sensitivity, promote better sleep, and increase the release of mood-enhancing chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin. Together, these changes can help women feel more emotionally balanced and resilient.

Exercise may also help reduce common symptoms associated with hormonal changes, including fatigue, irritability, anxiety, low mood, and difficulty sleeping. While it isn’t a cure for hormonal conditions, staying active can make these symptoms more manageable and improve overall quality of life.

The best type of exercise is the one you enjoy and can do consistently. Walking, strength training, yoga, swimming, cycling, dancing, and Pilates all provide physical and mental health benefits. Some women may find they have more energy for higher-intensity workouts during certain times of their menstrual cycle and prefer gentler activities, such as walking or yoga, during others. Listening to your body and adjusting your routine when needed is a healthy and sustainable approach.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection, but instead it’s consistency. Every workout is an investment in your physical health, your emotional well-being, and your future quality of life.

Getting Started Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Many people believe they need to spend hours in the gym or train intensely to experience the mental health benefits of exercise. The goal is to move your body consistently. Small steps taken regularly have a much greater impact than ambitious plans that never get started.

Remember, every workout is an investment in your future self.

Conclusion

Don’t be surprised if your mental health provider asks whether you’re exercising. As you’ve learned, this question isn’t simply about your weight or physical fitness; it’s about your overall mental well-being. Exercise is one of the most effective lifestyle interventions we have for supporting the brain. It complements therapy, healthy habits, and, when appropriate, medication by improving mood, reducing stress, strengthening resilience, and promoting long-term emotional health.

If you’re not currently exercising, don’t feel discouraged. You don’t have to make dramatic changes overnight to experience the benefits. Start with a short walk, a beginner yoga class, dancing to your favorite music, or any activity you genuinely enjoy. Small, consistent steps are far more powerful than trying to be perfect.

As you begin your journey, think beyond today. Ask yourself, “What kind of health do I want to have 10 or 20 years from now?” Every time you choose to move your body, you’re making an investment in your future self. Your brain, your body, and your mental health will thank you for it.

Resources to Help You Get Started

<p
